Ameleset Muchie Launches Streaming Platform MayaFlicks

Ameleset Muchie, an actress and producer, has launched a new streaming service called MayaFlicks. The platform, which was made public last week, offers a diverse selection of movies, documentaries, and series and can be accessed via the web, Android, and the App Store.

Giving users unlimited access to its library for 15 birr per day or 40 birr per month, the platform aims to become the go-to platform for movies in Ethiopia.

“MayaFlicks aims to solve the distribution problem in Ethiopian cinema by making movies more accessible for all,” Yeshewas Amslawu, social media manager at MayaFlicks, told Shega.

The platform is also working on streaming the latest movies simultaneously while they are being watched in cinemas.

“This will be especially beneficial for the Diaspora as well as those living in regional states, giving them front-row access to the latest movies,” he added.

The platform currently has a library of a few movies, including Taza, Min Alesh, and Qine, and is in talks to add more.

MayaFlicks is integrated with the YenePay payment gateway, enabling users to pay subscription fees via airtime, telebirr, as well as other local and international payment options.

The streaming service is the latest addition to Ameleset’s Maya brand, which includes Maya Media and Maya Muzika.

Ameleset, who is married to Ethiopian singer Teddy Afro and has four children, has acted and directed in five movies. She is also an outspoken advocate for environmental issues in Ethiopia.

MayaFlicks is the most recent player in Ethiopia’s booming streaming scene. Samrawit Fikru, the founder and CEO of RIDE, has entered the streaming business with Sewasew and has signed popular names like Aster Awoke and Teddy Afro. Last month, Spotify, the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service, also started working in Ethiopia.
