Coffee Resurrect, an Ethiopian startup that specializes in upcycling coffee waste has been named runner-up at the 2022 Sustainable Beauty Award Winners, for “pushing the boundaries of sustainability in the beauty industry”.
Coffee Resurrect won second place in the Sustainable Ingredient Award category for its two products, oil and fiber, which are made of spent coffee grounds, the coffee residue obtained during the brewing process.
The Sustainable Beauty Awards are organized by Ecovia Intelligence, a research, and consulting firm that focuses on global ethical product industries, and the winners were announced on November 7, 2022, in Paris, France.
Coffee Resurrect came in second place, after competing with brands from France and Italy.
Coffee, grown in about 80 countries, is one of the world’s most popular beverages and the second-largest traded commodity after petroleum.
However, the huge amount of residue generated annually in the production and consumption of coffee requires innovation and a waste management plan. Spent coffee grounds are typically dumped into general waste and sent to landfills, where they emit methane.
Coffee Resurrect is among the new green startups that are trying to solve this problem by upcycling the waste. Coffee oil is known to promote skin and hair health.
Meanwhile, brewed coffee contains soluble fiber that aids digestion, helps the body absorb vital nutrients, and keeps a lid on cholesterol.
The startup says its ingredients are “affordable luxury” made in Ethiopia and are 100% natural, active, and multi-functional made for the global WellCare market.
